NNPFA hosts monthly events on the 3rd Saturday March through September. These swaps are an educational and fundraising effort for our organization. We hope to give our members, youth groups, and the community a place to meet up, purchase, and talk chickens. However, this year we have the added challenge of avian influenza (H1N5) and its impact on the community. The Nevada Department of Agriculture has officially banned any events or shows where cattle, poultry or eggs are exhibited until further notice.
Chicks that have been incubated and kept in brooders are allowed at the swap in solid sided, covered containment. To accomplish safe practices, each seller will be assigned a designated area. Chicks hatched by a hen or ANY ADULT BIRDS are not approved by the state vet to be offered in person at swaps. Any proposed exchanges of adult birds must be one to one, meaning not in a public swap or similar event. NNPFA will assist in helping both sellers and buyer facilitate this in any way we can. It is suggested that photos of any available poultry be posted at swaps and arrangements made between buyers and sellers to complete the exchange of live birds at a location agreed upon by both parties.
Eating or hatching eggs can be sold but must be kept in the sellers’ vehicles and not displayed on a table or kept near the live chicks.
We recognize a need for an outlet for those beautiful but sometimes noisy roosters that are not allowed in some communities. In the past, as a service to our community and as a fundraiser, NNPFA accepts surrenders of healthy unwanted roosters, as well as other unwanted poultry, with a donation to our organization.
Due to the Nevada Department of Agriculture imposing a temporary ban, the state vet has recommended that any roosters or poultry surrendered to NNPFA should be on a one-to-one basis, NOT AT SWAPS. This means we are not able to take adult birds at the swaps but can only take them from individuals to ensure the best bio-security practices. If you have roosters or surplus poultry that you would like to surrender, please request arrangements via email on our website, message us on our Facebook page or inquire at the swap table. One of our rescue members will meet with you at a predetermined location with a disinfected carrier to transfer your poultry to a quarantine area.
NNPFA strives to teach our youth and all poultry enthusiasts about breeds, husbandry, biosecurity, exhibiting, and general information about the hobby. Money raised throughout the year is used for that education and youth awards at our annual NNPFA Youth & Open Poultry and Egg show. Any donation big or small is greatly appreciated and is tax deductible!Viruses like Avian influenza or Virulent New Castle are not new but sometimes mutate to affect other species such as cattle, felines, and humans. If we all practice good biosecurity, we can be part of the solution in keeping our flocks and our communities happy and healthy.
The California and Nevada Departments of Agriculture have issued a ban on all poultry (birds & eggs) and cattle exhibitions at fairs until further notice.
