Avian Influenza ban has been lifted!

Swaps

NNPFA hosts monthly events on the 3rd Saturday March through September. These swaps are an educational and fundraising effort for our organization. We hope to give our members, youth groups, and the community a place to meet up, purchase, and talk chickens. However, this year we have the added challenge of avian influenza (H1N5) and its impact on the community. The Nevada Department of Agriculture has officially lifted the ban on any events where cattle, poultry or eggs are exhibited as of June 1, 2025. However the disease is still active in surrounding states so strict biosecurity procedures will be in place.

*Anyone entering the swap area MUST walk through a foot bath of disinfectant and use hand sanitizer before, during and after handling any poultry.

*All sellers MUST keep their area clean ensuring birds have adequate bedding and are not wet or messy with feces.

*Remember to quarantine any animals purchased at the swap for a minimum of 10 days before introducing them to your flock.

Eating or hatching eggs can be sold and displayed.

Thank you for helping us keep all the birds happy and healthy!

Poultry Surrenders

We recognize a need for an outlet for those beautiful but sometimes noisy roosters that are not allowed in some communities. In the past, as a service to our community and as a fundraiser, NNPFA accepts surrenders of healthy unwanted roosters, as well as other unwanted poultry, with a donation to our organization.

The ban has been lifted however strict biosecurity procedures will be in place.

If you have roosters or surplus poultry that you would like to surrender, please come to the swap table first and complete the transaction.  We may have you fill out an "Info Card" to help with finding a new home for your bird(s).  You will be given a receipt to take with your bird(s) to the trailer. You will be required to walk through a disinfectant foot bath.  You will also need to use hand sanitizer if you handle any birds other than your own.

Thank you for helping us keep all the birds happy and healthy!

Raffle and community support opportunities

As a fundraiser, NNPFA will have a raffle at each swap. Tickets are $.50 each and the item will be available for viewing.  Raffle is held at 12:30 and the item must be claimed by 1:00 at close of the swap.  Get a free raffle ticket by bringing a non perishable food item for the Northern Nevada Food Bank!

We strive to support the community by inviting other nonprofit groups to join us at our monthly swaps.  Please be sure to stop by their tables to see what they're all about!

Reduce ruffled feathers

NNPFA strives to teach our youth and all poultry enthusiasts about breeds, husbandry, biosecurity, exhibiting, and general information about the hobby. Money raised throughout the year is used for that education and youth awards at our annual NNPFA Youth & Open Poultry and Egg show. Any donation big or small is greatly appreciated and is tax deductible! Viruses like Avian influenza or Virulent New Castle are not new but sometimes mutate to affect other species such as cattle, felines, and humans. If we all practice good biosecurity, we can be part of the solution in keeping our flocks and our communities happy and healthy.

Help Our Cause

Let's work together to keep our flocks safe and healthy

Biosecurity recommendations

  • Wash hands before and after coming in contact with birds.
  • Limit the number of people that come into contact with your flock to those necessary for their care.
  • Use personal protective equipment such as shoe covers, gloves, hair and clothing covers.
  • Clean and disinfect equipment before and after each use.
  • Do not share tools or supplies between flocks.
  • Flocks should be housed in enclosures that prevent any exposure to wild birds or waterfowl, such as barns or similar covered, secure areas.
  • Avoid attracting wild birds and waterfowl by securing feed and not using wild bird feeders on or near the premises.
  • Quarantine new birds or birds returning to the flock for 30 days before (re)introduction.
  • Quarantine sick birds immediately and report to the USDA at (866) 536-7593 or the NDA State Veterinarian at pmundschenk@agri.nv.gov.
